Who reads your receipts

Updated 31 October 2026. This page is part of our Privacy Policy, section 5. When this list changes, we change this page and its date.

In short: The AI services of three companies read your receipt photos: Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. They work only on our instructions, may not train their models on what we send, and are not given your name, email or account.

What they do

Automated extraction reads the receipt photos you send us and returns the products and prices. Each company below receives the photograph as taken, including anything printed on it, such as a tax number or what you bought at a pharmacy. It is not given your name, email or account.

OpenAI first looks at a photo sent on its own, to check that it isn't a personal picture sent by mistake and whether the whole receipt is in it. We then try one company first and move to another if it fails or can't read the photo, and a second company may check a doubtful price. So one photo can reach more than one company.

The companies

Company Service Where it processes How long it keeps what we send
Anthropic Claude API United States; processing can also run in other countries 30 days, or up to 2 years if flagged under its usage policy
OpenAI OpenAI API United States Up to 30 days, to monitor for abuse
Google Gemini API, paid tier Any country where Google has facilities A limited period, to monitor for abuse. Google does not say how many days

What binds them

Each of these companies:

  • works only on our instructions, under a data-processing agreement;
  • may not use what we send to train its models;
  • where it handles data outside the EU/EEA, is covered by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or an adequacy decision.

Shelf-tag photos

This page is about receipts. A photo of a shelf tag shows a shop's shelf, not what you bought, so it isn't covered here. These same companies read it, and another AI service may check its price.

Our other service providers are named in section 5 of the Privacy Policy.
